Slowly Cream made her way down the shaded riding trail. Alex rode relaxed in the saddle, barely touching the rains. They had ridden the trails so often that Alex hardly ever need to guide his horse leaving him free to his thoughts, to take in the vibrant forest around him, and on this rare occasion enjoy the company of his new friend Shannion.

Shannon smiled contently, pushing that persistent ache in her back to the back of her mind, stubbornly ignoring it. Cookie rocked softly beneath her, his long legs moving gracefully, his long stride keeping up with Cream easily. Her long, black hair fluttered softly behind her in the light breeze. She layed her hands on his shoulders, helping to balance herself on his back. The reins lay loosely beneath her fingers, allowing the horse to guide himself as he paced alongside Cream. She glanced over at Alex, curiously. He looked like he had quite a bit of riding experience. He also looked very lost in thought. "What are you thinking about?" she asked, curiously.

with a shy smile Alex looked at Shannon "truthfully, this is going to sound a little lame"he said looking into her eyes "I was thinking how nice it is to be out spending time with a friend". he said his piece than feeling suddenly bashful dropped his gaze. he was normally so easy go, this bout of shyness was un-befitting of him or so he though. "and how about you, what are you thinking"

Shannon smiled, feeling suddenly a little bashful herself. Her cheeks pinkened, but it was so slight it could be easily mistaken for the simple effects of the wind on her face. She averted her eyes, allowing them to hide beneath her dark lashes. "I was thinking how great you look..." she stopped and turned bright red, quickly adding, "umm...at riding, I mean..."

"riding right" Alex gave a deep hearty laugh "well I am most impressed with your 'riding' as well" he jokingly put extra emphases on the word riding. "I'm only good at riding because I have been practicing since I was six, used to live in Dallas and Eric had a ranch near Grandbury which is not far from there."

Shannon blushed bright, embarrassingly red at his comment about liking her "riding". Hasty to change the subject, she said "Wow, I've always thought it would be awesome to live on a ranch! Or, near there." she corrected herself, realizing he hadn't said he lived on the ranch itself. She let her mind wander to rolling pastures, dusty western saddles, cows... She jerked herself back to reality. "Who's Eric?" she asked curiously.

"he is my father" Alex spat the last word out as if it left a bad taste in his mouth, his expression darkened slightly. forcing a smile he continued "the ranch was nice, used to swim there a lot".

"Umm...okay...sorry," Shannon saw his expression darken, and she wondered what she'd said wrong. He obviously didn't like his father much... And he'd called his father by his first name! To Shannon that was a completely foreign concept.

as they rode the trail widened as it crossed a large clearing. taking advantage of the extra room, Alex rained in so he could move in line with Shannon. "please don't apologize, you've done nothing wrong" he said touching her shoulder lightly.

A small shiver ran through Shannon at his touch. "Umm..." she mentally shook herself. What was this? She had never reacted like this to someone's touch before. Forcing a casual smile, she added "yeah, okay," hoping she didn't look and sound like a complete idiot. Or a complete sop.

returning his hand to the loss rains in his lap, Alex rode on in silence for a bit. lost in his thought, the startled when a strong wind blew thought the clearing streaming his long hair behind him. still looking ahead he spoke in a casual tone, "so tell me a little about yourself and I'll do the same for you".

The gust of wind whipped Shannon's hair back, making it look almost like a long black flag, rippling in the breeze. "Oh, umm..." she said, hesitating. What should she tell him? "Well...I used to be a champion-level showjumper. They said I might even make it to the olympics. Cookie here is my best friend, and I refused to come to this school until my dad told me they had a stable. I hate people who don't say what they mean, but expect everyone to know what they mean anyway. I love sunrises because everything is so quiet and peaceful. Oh, and I can't stand licorice." she chuckled. "That enough?"

Alex gasp in amazement as he watched Shannon's hair stream across her shoulders and soar in the breeze. The sun was low in the western sky. everything its rays touched was basked in a golden glow. She looked stunning and Alex could not help but smile to himself.
Alex's deep laugh echoed through the clearing "yes you have said quit enough, now I have some good news I don't like licorice either" he paused for effect than continued in a sadder voice "and regrettably some bad news, if you want to watch the sunrise with me this is going to be a very long ride."
