Alex laid there on the hot sand, red as the empty coke bottle in his hand. His loud steady shoring echoed across the still beach as the sun slowly sank towards the still waters. His umbrella lay a hundred yards away caught in some brush on the dunes, it had blow away why he sleep.
Alex had gone down to the beach at 6 that morning so he could paint the ocean in the changing lights the day. The only problem was that Alex had not been up before noon in two months. He made it till launch than passed out after eating the food he had brought along.

Echo wandered down the beach humming softly to herself, her skirt fluttered around her bare legs in the slight breeze that came in off the ocean. She moved gracefully, like a dancer, pointing her toes and dragging them through the warm sand, watching the patterns they made. Suddenly she noticed a boy laying in the sand, apparently asleep. She meandered over to him and stood there, looking at him. She said nothing. Simply...looked.

Alex stretched out and kicked at the sand as he slowly came awake. Opening his eyes and jumped back. Trying to get up he fell over twice before getting to his feet. “son of a bit.. I mean holy cra.. or a . . I mean how long have you been there”. He looked from echo to the sun set than back to her thinking to himself “how long was I asleep”.

"Only a minute," Echo replied with a light giggle. "What are you doing?" Her green eyes stared at him with unabashed curiosity.

"I was painting but I guess I fell a sleep". He said stretchering his arms causing tendrils of pain to course through his body. "I'm guessing I'm a little sun burnt" Alex said with a awkward laugh.

"Barbados aloe," She said, nodding sagely. "Aloe vera. Seeps through the fire, makes the burn go away."

Echo shook her head. "No, I am nothing but an echo. A song never quite sung. I carry no cool healing to fight the fire. You may call me Echo." She smiled sweetly at him, her eyes reflecting the blue of the ocean, and her wavy hair dancing around her shoulders in the light salty breeze.

Alex laughed "well echo, you look more like a memory to me, and a good one at that" he said with a grin.

Echo's eyes widened. He spoke her language! Or, at least, he sounded like he could. "A memory requires those to remember. But this one thanks you for your kind words." She gave him a sweet smile. She liked his laugh, it made her feel comfortable.

His grin widened, she talked in riddles but they made sense. "I have meet you, I will remember you". Alex paused to form his thoughts "you are not like most people around here". he tossed his long black hiar over his shoulder "I. . .I find that refreshing" he said with are nod. he could not help but stare into her blue eyes, they sparkled with the evening light.

Echo watched him with child-like interest. "Echo is not like most anywhere. A shadow, passing from place to place, the cloud casts a shadow on the grass. Fleeting reality, but for the moment when the shadow disappears again. This shadow likes staying."

Alex laughed happily "where there is light there is shadow, you may stay as long as you like". he looked at his paints laying on the ground near his note book than at Echo. glancing back at the paint he got a idea. "I was here to paint the light but would you mind if I painted the shadow" he ask trying hard not to look nervous.

Echo smiled sweetly at him. "The shadow would not mind."

Alex turned to a fresh page of watercolor paper and opened his paint. he mixed in a little water from a bottle to he had with him. working quickly he aimed to catch the essence of the moment more than the event. Giant strokes of red and purple for the setting sun, quick dabs of gold to catch the sun shining in her hair and to top it off her painted to blue orbs so deep and full of fire that you could get lost in them.
