Shannon slowed Cookie to a brisk trot as they entered the riding ring. She cantered and trotted him in turns around the ring as she waited for DJ to catch up.

DJ didn’t rock up to the ring until it was a good ten minutes that passed by. Yup, that’s how much he sucks at horse riding. “Alright, I’m here,” he said, laughing. “Sorry, I think I got lost…Wait…Shannon, if you’re jumping, don’t you need a helmet?”

Shannon shook her head. "I'm not doing anything particularly hard. They don't have anything particularly hard here. Don't worry, I won't be at it that long. Glad you made it!" She moved Cookie to one end of the ring, having walked the course with him already, and took a deep breath. Then she leaned forward and whispered in his ear. The horse responded immediately, moving into a smooth canter toward the first jump. He sailed over it with a good 2 yards to spare, His mane blowing back into Shannon's face. Shannon's coal black eyes were bright, and her hair windblown, and her olive complexion glowed. She beamed at DJ. "That was GREAT! It didn't hurt nearly as much as I thought it would! I'm gonna run the whole course, since it's nothing too difficult, want to watch?" she grinned at him her eyes sparkling and her face bright, and full of life for the first time in a long time.

DJ felt anxious again, but he told himself he was overreacting as he saw Shannon glide across the air and over the jump on Cookie. And she seemed happy… “I don’t think you’re gonna give me a choice,” DJ said with a grin. “Ah, go on then, do the whole thing!”

"YES!" Shannon punched a fist in the air, ignoring the little twinge of pain in her back at the movement. She lined Cookie up and began, soaring through one jump after another, both of them as graceful as dancers, perfectly in sync. She went over the first one, second one, third one, perfectly. She landed the fourth and a sharp pain shot through her back and down her legs, burning with knife-like pain. She gasped and jerked a little. Cookie took her jerk to mean "Stop now", and he stopped short just in front of the fifth jump. Shannon, unprepared, went flying over poor Cookie's head to land hard on her back on the other side of the jump. She lay there in the dirt, unmoving.

“FUCK!” DJ swore in shock. He attempted to climb off Beanie, though the result was rather clumsy and he tumbled onto the dirt. Nonetheless, he pushed himself off and ran over to his motionless friend, trying desperately to remember the training his dad had given him. COWS. Don’t shake them or their shoulders, they might have a neck injury… “Can you hear me?” DJ asked, his voice quivering as he gently nudged the sole of her foot. No answer. He tried to stay calm. “Open your eyes.” Still no answer. “What’s your name?” Not a single word. DJ crouched down and held her hand. “Squeeze my hand.” Nothing. “HELP!” He yelled.
Jo ran over to the direction of the riding ring as soon as she heard some call for help. She spotted a boy crouching by a immobile girl, and her heart stopped in fear. She got to the pair as fast as she could. “Call 911!” the boy said to her, obviously recognizing her as a teacher. She pulled her cell phone out, but she knew she would be able to speak, so she dialed the number and gave the phone to the boy. The boy didn’t ask questions and spoke right away. “We need an ambulance at Four Oaks Academy at the stables area. A girl fell off her horse and I’ve performed the COWS procedure, she’s unconscious and unresponsive, we need you to get here right away.”
(New thread at the hospital?)
